When you meet somebody new, it can be fun to "check them out" using different techniques for character analysis. Palm reading is an ancient art that interprets the general characteristics of one’s hands, through the study of the the lines, their patterns and other formations, which appear on the palm and fingers. I've gathered up some basic palmistry principles that are easy to learn and implement.

Shapes of hand

The palm is composed of small bones. There are nearly 14 bones joined together, which gives a particular shape to the palm. The type and shape of hand is very important to understand palmistry. It had been broadly classified into six shapes as decussed below

Square hand

People with a square hand have a square palm, a square wrist, square at the base of the fingers and the fingers and nails are also square. This hand is characterised by large thumb, qualities of square palm are mentioned below.

• Practical and Logical 
• Honest and Reliable 
• Lead Disciplined life 
• Respect law and Order 

 Philosophic hands

A philosophic hand is long, narrow and delicate with slender tampering fingers and long almond shapre nails, these kind of hands looks very beautiful,  however it indicates lack of energy and strength. The qualities of philosophic hands are mentioned below.

Spatulate hands

People with the fingers of their hand flattened like a spatula have rather strange characteristic feature: a large thumb which is extremely to its base, qualities of Spatulate hands are mentioned below

•  Restless 
•  Instinctive 
•  Dedicated towards work 
•  Like exploring new routes and places 
•  Have navigational skills 
•  Like getting involved in mechanical works 
•  Live to their own ideology  

Artistic or Conic Hands

The person with such hands has smooth fingers, with the nails of shaped like cones,giving the hand its name. The palm is broad, thick and large and thumb is also unsually huge, qualities of the artistic or conic hands are mentioned below.

Psychic Hands

A person with a small and slender hand, characterised by smooth fingers is kown as psychic or idealistic hand. The palm is medium in size, and the pahalanges with nails are long and tampering, while the thumb is small and elegant, qualities of the artistic or conic hands are mentioned below.

• Visionary and Idealistic nature. 
• Less energy and Strength 
• Lead  very confused life 
• Lack of discipline in life 

Elementary Hand

In appearance the hand is coarse and clumsy, with a large, thick heavy palm, short fingers and short nails. The hand itself is extremely short and barely reaches the base of the first finger. 

Types of hands

There are four basic hand types. They are closely connected with the four elements of the world, Earth, Fire, Water and Air. These are also linked with corresponding character traits.

Fire hand

People with the fire hand have expansive palms, wide and generaous sometimes boxy in appearance, as well as short fingers. This hand hearlds an exroverted personality and those who make natural leaders. These people are at their best when organising and getting things done as people manage ment is their second nature. They are doers rather then thinkers.

Air hand

Air hands are long and narrow open elegent in appearance, on either a man or woman. This hand indicate creative people who crave variety. Communications and travelling attract them and they can swiftly turn disadvantage to advantage and learn fast.

Earth hand

This is solid squarish hand with thick fingers. Their character flourish best when helping to maintain order, they are also tidy and level headed. They do well outdoors or using their hands and they excel in the armed services, police or security work. They can be somewhat impatient.

Water hand

Water hand are long much like air hands, but the quality of the water hands is their immediate dampness, or moistness, apparent on their first touch. People with the water hand flourish in caring professions because they empathise with others. Equally at home in the creative arts, they make good musicians, actors, writers and beauticians.

Size of palms

Size of palms plays an important factor in judging character and personality of an individual.  

Big palms

Indicate patience, quality and fineness in planning and execution of plans. People with big palms lead masses, hold strong and important position in society because of the qualities they possess.

Small palms

On contrary people with small palms lack patience. They are aggressive, lack fineness in quality of work and tend to finish off their work quickly, if not left incomplete.

Texture of Skin

Skin of an hand plays an important role in making predictions about success and personality. Hand should neither be too soft or too hard.

Hard skin

Hard skin indicates mental toughness. Such people have strong control over emotions, inexpressive, just like a hard nut to break open.

Soft Skin

Soft skin indicates low immune, instable and soft core mind. People with such palms tend to catch infections easily. They can don't have long concentration spans. If such palms are also thin, people get nervous easily and catch up worries. And if such palms are muscular enough then people have strong sexual desires and tend to live luxurious life.

Hair on Hands

Hair on backhand are the indicators of aggression and impulsive personality. The degree of effect depends highly upon quantity, quality and colour of hair. Lets discus them one by one.

Reddish hair show aggression. Black colour hair also indicate same. Brown or golden hair indicate soft end in the personality of an individual.

Colour of the Skin

Ideally skin of palm should be baby pink in colour. Dark pink or reddish spots in skin palms indicate aggression in the person. Yellow tones indicate problems related to blood and circulatory system. While in most of the cases it indicates low Haemoglobin, it can also indicate problems related to heart under specific circumstances. If the skin colour turn whitish it indicate problems related to nerves or nervous system. Mostly such people catch fears and worries more frequently.

Thumb

Thumb represents whole hand. With growing knowledge and experience you will realise that if you are able to study thumb properly, you get a good idea what a hand will look like. A thumb has three phalange, each indicating an important aspect of life. As the illustration indicates, first phalange indicates will power, second logic & reasoning and the third indicates sexual drive.

Nails

Nails is another aspect that is widely ignored by most palmists. But it holds significance in terms of judging personality and helps particularly in medical astrology. Shape of nails and its significance

Long Nails: Long nails indicate patience and cool composure.

Small nails: Small nails indicate aggression, short temper and impulsive nature.

Broad Nails: Broad nails again indicate aggression and impulsive nature.

Flexiblity of hands

The degree of flexibility in your hand indicates your emotional and mental health. In short, a flexible hands represents a flexible mind and still hands shows a stiff mind.

Joints and Knuckles

Joints: If fingers joints are clearly visible, it indicates that has the good analytical power while smooth joints indicate ‘easy to go’ and careless attitude of an individual.

Knuckles: People with the smooth knuckles are found to be very particular about their appearance and their home. Those with uneven knuckles tend to have more balanced and cal approach in life.

Mounts

Mounts are raised pads under the base of each finger and dotted around the palm. Each palm has nine zones or pads more popularly known as mounts. Each mounts denotes the mental, physical, emotional, peculiarities of the individual.

Jupiter: Below Index finger, it signifies self esteem, energy, ambition, desire to control, if Jupiter becomes extra ordinary strong, the desire to control aggravates and behaves like dictator, If Jupiter is weak in hand person lacks self esteem, sense of direction in life. Such people tend to follow than taking charge of situation. Generally such people face problem like aimless life.

Saturn: Located below middle finger, it signifies truthfulness, philosophy, conservative thoughts, introvert personality, interest in culture and classical art forms. When Saturn is strong, people tend to disbelieve others. Their interest in opposite sex (particularly marriage) reduces. Such people prefer being single.

Sun:  Located below ring finger, it signifies inclination towards natural arts, social and professional reputation, ego and self image and outlook towards life. When Sun is strong, a person has high self esteem, strong ego. He can go to any level to create or maintain his social outlooks. Such a person always leads a dual life wearing social mask. If Sun is weak, person lives an unorganised life. Such a person is not good at education and learning things.

Mercury: Located below little finger, it signifies, communication skill, ability to earn money, accounting, social behaviour, if Mercury is strong in a hand a person becomes more of a self centred personality. He cares more about his personal interests. Such a person has good communication skills, makes acquaintances fast. If Mercury is weak, person generally struggles in his profession. Such a person is weak at accounting and avoids such jobs or duties.

Moon: Located vertically below Mount of Ketu till the wrist, it signifies imiganation, inclination towards natural arts, creativity, state of mind, travelling etc.  If Moon is strong, person loves travelling, is creative by nature and has strong inclination towards natural arts. If Moon is weak person always remain frustrated or to better say in a state of depression.

Venus: Located beside thumb, parallel to Mount of Moon, it signifies will power, immunity,desire to live, inclination towards natural arts, ability to reproduce, If Venus is strong in a hand, person has strong will power, enjoys general good health. If Venus is weak person is devoid of good health. Such person catches fears and worries easily.

Mars: Located below Jupiter, it signifies courage, aggression, digestive system, etc. A strong Mars makes person aggressive and offensive. A weak Mars generally give digestive problem to a person. If Mars is weak females tend to have gynaecological problems.

Rahu (Dragon Head): Located below the head line, surrounded by the mounts of moon, mars and venus, if rahu is big and strong a person becomes offencive and aggressive by nature, if rahu is weak the person becomes defensive and laid back in attitude. 

Ketu (Dragon Tail): Located little above the bracelets, dividing the mount of venus and moon and is near the starting point of the fate line, if ketu is big and strong, mostly people tend to become defencive by nature, such people are mostly day dreamers, if ketu is weak a person has more of an offencive and aggressive personality.

Lines

When one sees the palm one will notice many lines on it. These are the lines of the hand, it is important to observe even the tinest line as each line found on the palm has its own importance and relevence.

Life Line: It begins from the side of a hand separating the mounts of Jupiter and Rahu. It takes a curve, covering almost one fourth of a palm and ends on wrist below the thumb. It indicates Vitality & Courage of an individual It may be a complete line or visible in parts.

Line of Head:  It starts at the edge of the palm under the index finger and flows across the palm towards the outside edge, it indicates mental inclinations, the thought process, intellegence, proficiency etc.

Line of Heart: This line starts from unbder the Mercury, seperating the areas of mercury and harshala, reaching under the index finger and the mount of Jupiter, it represents the matter of the heart, both physical and metaphorical.

Line of Fate: This line runs vertically from the middle of the base of the palm and up towards the middle finger, line of fate in hand is seen to judge financial matters but it is not only just restricted to wealth as it tells a lot about other aspects of life.

Line of Marriage: This line is situated on the line of mercury, this line comes from the outside of the palm towards the inside of the palm on the mount of Mercury, it indicates infatuations, love affairs and marriage.

Line of Health: This line begins from the life line and travels to the mount of Mercury, this line provide indications about one’s health.

Lines of Children: These are the vertical horozontal lines found on the base of the Venus near thumb base, strong lines indicate son and thinner lines indicate daughter. Counting starts from the base of the thumb and goes to the other side.

 Lines of Travel: These are the vertical horizontal lines on the mount of Moon, these lines indicates to travel, people with such lines are restless by  nature and try choose professtions that involves lots of travelling.

This is the outline of the basics, but you can study palmistry all your life without every getting bored. As a divination and diagnostic tool, it is an excellent addition to anyone skill set.
